  • 1 x Kingston UV400 120GB SSD - boot drive (hit the 3D NAND/TRIM bug with the original WD green selection, failing scrub and showing as corrupted OS files) Decided to go with no mirror and use the config backup script.
  • 2 x WD Green 3D NAND (120GB, 2.5") - Boot drives (maybe mess around trying out the thread to put swap here too link).
  • 1 x ASUS Z10PA-D8 (LGA 2011-v3, Intel C612 PCH, ATX) - Dual socket MoBo.

The three pools in this one system represent the three NAS systems I had before the consolidation. I have even put together some hardware just to test things out a time or two.įor a while I had three systems, all at once, at home but I am making some hardware changes right now and only one NAS is online. I made some mistakes along the way, learned some and I try to share some of those lessons learned experiences here in the forum. This is the 8th FreeNAS unit I have built for home. What can be the reason for this? I don't get it.This one was built in 2018, but I reused the name from a previous build. But the thing is that when i copy one of the video files from the NAS locally to the SSD on the Macbook, it suddenly plays perfectly fine without any stuttering whatsoever! I mean, the footage is pretty heavy obviously. Now i thought, maybe it is the performance difference between the devices.

Sometimes there is a bit where it plays smoothly but most of it is just horribly stuttery and crap to look at to be honest.

On the Macbook pro however it is extremely stuttery. When skipping ahead it has to load a couple seconds but then plays perfectly smooth.

On the Windows PC i can play this footage perfectly fine right from the NAS, no stutters whatsoever. The filetype is MOV and the codec is "MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hvc1)" I have a Panasonic GH6 and recorded some footage in 5.7K 300 Mbit/s. Switching from AFP to SMB gave a slight improvement but it did not solve the problem. The Windows PC is connected with just SMB.

I tried connecting with AFP and SMB on the Macbook. A small difference but i doubt this would cause the problem i'm having. I ran a couple 1-minute iPerf3 network speedtests and the Windows PC gave 930 Mbit/s average and the Macbook reported 880 Mbit/s average. So i have a windows PC and a Macbook Pro 2016 that are both connected in the same way to my Synology NAS.
